Winter 'ideal time to improve home security'
Winter is a good time to consider improving home security, according to Halifax Home Insurance.
People should make an effort to deter thieves during the winter months when darker nights provide cover for thieves looking to break into homes, commented David Rochester, head of underwriting for the bank.
Properties that are easy to get into are likely to be a target for criminals, whether owners are inside the house or not, he remarked.
Tips to increase home security and prevent theft include fitting visible locks to windows and installing security lights, which can act both as a deterrent and a warning to people inside, Mr Rochester advised.
Homeowners are also advised to have prominent burglar alarms and keep valuable items out of sight and doors and windows locked, he added.
"Don't leave doors and windows unlocked when rooms are unoccupied, even if you are in the house, as many opportunist burglaries occur when the owners are in the house, and burglars have simply reached in to grab whatever they can," Mr Rochester explained.
Nearly 15 million homeowners in the UK are exposing themselves to theft by leaving their valuables on display, according to research by Liverpool Victoria.
