Pitt review 'acknowledges concerns of insurance industry'

An interim report on this summer's floods by Sir Michael Pitt has addressed the concerns of the insurance industry, according to More Than.

Sir Pitt, chairman of the South West Strategic Health Authority, described the summer floods as a "wake up call" for the UK and made a series of recommendations intended to prevent future catastrophes.

Mike Holliday-Williams, managing director of More Than, said he is hopeful that the recommendations will form "positive new initiatives" on future flooding, and mentioned that one of the immediate priorities should be the building and maintenance of flood defences.

He has called for a more "joined-up approach" to flood risk management, with the cooperation of local planning authorities.

"We believe that action is needed now to bring forward the planned increase in flood defense spending and to restrict building on flood plains," he stated.

"Inappropriate building not only presents a high flood risk to the new development but also to the surrounding existing properties."

During the summer, More Than received over 6,000 weather-related claims.
