Burglars' Christmas wish list

Thieves may be looking to people's homes instead of Santa for gifts on their Christmas wish lists, new research has shown.

A survey of convicted burglars by insurer Zurich has revealed that Christmas may be an ideal time for thieves to make money on stolen goods.

The report showed that money and credit cards, along with digital cameras and jewellery, are high on the list of thieves' most wanted gifts at Christmastime.

Laptops were at the top of the list and were recorded as being the most lucrative steal for thieves when sold on.

Mark Seales, managing director of retail at Zurich, commented: "For some thieves, the festive season is like a gift on a platter.

"They've told us how Christmas and the new year are key times for them to make the most of everyone else's generosity, but many people just don't think of the risk."

Mr Seales advises taking simple security precautions over the festive period, like making the home seem occupied and keeping gifts out of sight.

The BBC recently reported that thieves will also attempt to steal £430 million worth of products from the high street this year, according to a Check Point Retail study.
