Halifax: 'Curse of the crayon' is damaging homes
Walls and paintwork that have been damaged or defaced by crayon-wielding children accounts for 65 per cent of the damage caused by toddlers to their parents' property, Halifax has revealed.
New research published by the bank has shown that toddlers caused £122 million worth of damage to their homes over the last 12 months.
Spillages are the most common cause of damage, while computer breakages meant three per cent of homeowners had to pay out large sums for repairs.
Accidental damage claims such as these cost £529.68 on average, which may be a big expense for those without the right level of cover, according to Halifax.
Martyn Foulds, senior claims manager at Halifax, said: "Parents can protect themselves from the costs of home repairs and damaged contents by ensuring their home insurance includes accidental damage cover."
A study from Direct Line in October stated that two-thirds of parents with children under five said the value of their homes had been reduced due to damage caused by their children.
