'Improving your home could save you money'

Insulating homes could save people up to £200 a year, according to the Energy Savings Trust (EST).

The coming year is expected to see price hikes in energy bills, Centrica, owner of British Gas has said, meaning that homeowners may benefit from making simple improvements to their homes, such as wall and loft insulation.

Rob Bell, energy doctor for the EST, has commented that nearly 50 per cent of the heat that escapes from people's houses leaves through roofs and walls.

"The biggest win around energy saving in your home by far is by having it properly insulated. Almost 50 per cent of the heat that you pay to put into your home is automatically almost straight away lost," he said.

Mr Bell has advised homeowners to get wall cavities filled that mostly occur in houses built between the 1920s and 1980s, along with insulating beneath timber floors and a minimum of 270mm of loft insulation.

Only 37 per cent of homes have the adequate insulation for wall cavities, according to Scottish Widows' annual Ethical Policy Index.
