New Year's Eve: Party time for burglars

One in six UK homeowners will be bringing in the new year by protecting their houses, new research has revealed.

Homeowners are becoming increasingly worried about the threat posed to their well-stocked homes in the post-Christmas period, according to Abbey.

People would rather stay at home on one of the biggest nights of the year for fear that they may be robbed, the insurer has said.

The ICM study for Abbey showed that 1.1 million people have been burgled while out celebrating, with people living in the south-east suffering most from empty houses on New Year's Day compared to the rest of the UK.

Anthony Frost of Abbey said: "Perhaps recent high profile burglaries, such as those of Liverpool footballers Steven Gerrard and Dirk Kuyt, have served as a timely reminder as to what can happen to your home when burglars know you're not in."

Homeowners may wish to take extra precautions this new year, along with ensuring their home is adequately covered by insurance.
