Welsh debt levels 'crippling'

Welsh consumers are facing worryingly high levels of debt, it has been claimed.

According to reports by Wales on Sunday, a recent survey by Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu found that those in Wales are more inclined - compared with elsewhere in the UK - to make use of a credit card to cover the cost of Christmas.

Indeed, the firm found that a total of 28 per cent of Wales-based consumers choose to use a credit card for the purchase of a majority of Christmas gifts.

"The post-Christmas period is the busiest for the debt advice sector, as the expense of Christmas often tips many households into unmanageable debt," said Paul Mullins, chief executive of National Debtline.

"Many clients seek advice after the Christmas period once they have received their credit card statement in January/February," he added.

The history of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu goes back to 1845.
