NIA: Use professionals when insulating
When insulating a property it is always best to employ a professional company, it has been claimed.
Advice from the National Insulation Association (NIA) has stated that by employing professionals, homeowners will receive insulation that is properly installed according to industry guidelines.
People should avoid fitting insulation themselves as there are health and safety issues to be considered, such as ensuring air vents are sealed, as well as a series of potential problems that could arise, according to Neil Marshall, chief executive of the NIA.
Mr Marshall added that people may lose money by having insulation fitted incorrectly.
"If you pay for a professional installation they will ensure that the required depth of insulation is put into the loft and that the required pattern is followed by cross laying over the joists.
"If the incorrect amount of insulation is used it will not prove effective and can lead to heat loss."
Draught proofing doors and windows may also be an effective means of insulating the home, according to the Energy Saving Trust. Its statistics show that 20 per cent of heat loss in the home is due to poor ventilation and draught exclusion.
