Motor insurance 'is a must'
Motorists may be interested to learn that by owning a car they must have insurance in order to comply with a new offence called continuous insurance enforcement.
People will no longer be able to get away with having a vehicle without insurance, according to the British Insurance Brokers' Association (BIBA).
Graeme Trudgill, BIBA's technical and corporate affairs executive, commented that drivers without insurance will receive penalty notices even if their car is off the road, in which case car owners will require a statutory off the road notification.
"There's a new offence coming out and it will compare the database which has all the vehicles on and the database which has all the insurance details on," he said.
"If you've got a vehicle with no insurance then you're going to get systematically letters sent out followed up by penalty notices."
The government is currently setting out regulations that the insurance industry will adhere to and preparing for a large publicity campaign next year, Mr Trudgill stated.
People without car insurance in the UK cost insured drivers over £500 million a year, while on average they cause 160 deaths on the roads each year, according to the Motor Insurer's Bureau.
