Kitchen incidents 'may prompt insurance uptake'

Britain's amateur cooks may not be safe to be left alone in the kitchen, new research suggests.

Some 84 fires break out in kitchens every day, according to Halifax Home Insurance data, with 88 per cent of those caused by the misuse of appliances.

Blazes beginning in the kitchen account for about 64 per cent of the yearly total of accidental home fires, the insurer states, suggesting that people may want to make sure they are covered in the case of such incidents.

David Rochester, head of underwriting at Halifax Home Insurance, commented: "It's great to see TV stars getting the nation excited about cooking, but we are urging people who do take it up as a hobby to take extra care in the kitchen."

The study found that the average fire causes £9,264 worth of damage.

Separate research from Halifax Home Insurance recently found that one in four planned DIY projects in the UK goes over budget.
