Drivers warned about speeding

Motorists who are caught speeding could be at risk of higher insurance premiums, a price comparison website has warned.

According to moneysupermarket.com, drivers caught speeding twice could face premiums that are nearly 25 per cent higher, while a six-month driving ban could increase a renewal price by 50 per cent.

One speeding conviction, however, may not be as bad - research by the site reveals that many insurers do not punish one speeding conviction when it comes time to renew.

Peter Gerrard, head of insurance research at moneysupermarket.com, explained that "it's hardly surprising" that insurers are not happy with speeders, as it is a leading cause of accidents.

"Those drivers with only one blemish need not suffer with about a third of providers not touching the premium, but serial speeders will find fewer providers willing to insure them at increased prices," he remarked.

Research by Sainsbury's Bank found that 68 per cent of motorists had taken part in some kind of dangerous driving habit in the month before the study was carried out.
