'More consideration needed' over alternative fuels

The AA has called for more "joined-up thinking" at all levels of authority regarding the future of alternative fuels.

Edmund King, president of the AA, has said that the current way policy on so-called greener fuels is handled is confusing for motorists, claiming they are left baffled by a "green mist".

"Step-by-step changes to fuel incentives backed by time guarantees, instead of a headlong rush down one path followed by a u-turn, give drivers and business a better steer on where real change is headed and where to invest," Mr King said.

The AA has pointed to a number of areas where drivers could be confused in the search for cleaner, greener fuel.

A previous desire for people to use liquid petroleum gas (LPG) that "fell out of favour", the congestion charge changes that saw vehicles such as electric cars joined by others that use petrol and diesel on the exemption list, and current revisions on biofuel were highlighted.

The AA has advised drivers to adapt the way they drive to reduced carbon dioxide emissions by keeping to the speed limit on motorways and keeping tyres properly inflated, among other things.

Using LPG as a vehicle fuel can cut fuel bills by around 50 per cent, according to website lpg-vehicles.co.uk.
