Failing to insure 'puts homes at risk'
Homeowners who fail to insure their homes may be putting their property at risk, it has been claimed.
Insuring a home may cover it against fire, vandalism and natural disasters such as storms and floods and with the weather in the UK becoming increasingly severe, it is especially important to ensure that a house is protected, according to Nationwide.
Charlotte Sjoberg, campaigns manager at Nationwide, said: "Whether you are in a flood risk area or not, it is really important to protect your home against unexpected events.
"You really don't know what could happen - you could live on a main road and a vehicle could go into your house or you could have a fire, or you could be flooded. Any of these things unfortunately could happen which is why people must insure against them."
Ms Sjoberg added that it is not as complicated as people may think to work out what is needed in terms of home contents insurance and building insurance.
According to Nationwide figures, one in five people in the UK do not have buildings insurance, while 14 per cent of people do not have home contents insurance.
