'Get debt under control'
People have been advised to take control of their debt by one financial comparison website.
Research conducted by MoneyExpert.com has shown that over five million people have failed to keep up with repayments on their credit cards over the last six months.
The website has urged people to take action before their debt spirals out of control.
Sean Gardiner, chief executive of MoneyExpert.com, said: "Anyone in trouble needs to take action now because the situation will only get worse if they bury their heads in the sand.
"They need to get their debts under control and cut their spending."
People most likely to have missed their credit card payments are within the age group of 25 to 44.
Homeowners have also been struggling to keep up with their mortgage payments, according to MoneyExpert.com, with nearly half a million people missing payment deadlines since last July.
People finding difficulty in controlling their debt may wish to consider taking out a consolidation loan in order to reduce their monthly outgoings and make their debt more manageable.
