Contents insurance 'is a must this Valentine's Day'

People planning on buying expensive gifts for their loved one this Valentine's Day may wish to consider re-evaluating their home insurance, it has been claimed.

Jewellery is one of the most popular presents among Britons, who are set to spend around £467 million on such glittering gifts this year, according to Direct Line.

Andrew Lowe, head of Direct Line Home Insurance, said: "Insurance is probably the last thing on most people's mind when they are showering their loved ones with gifts on Valentine's Day.

"Having the right cover in place could prevent heartache if the unthinkable happens and that precious item is lost or stolen."

The insurance company has suggested that people keep proof of purchase and photographs of their new items.

People in the UK who may be susceptible to floods have also been warned by Direct Line to ensure that their home insurance is up to date due to the recent bad weather.
