Loved-up Brits splash out on their Valentine
UK romantics are expected to spend £1.6 million on Valentine's Day gifts this year, it has been estimated.
Of the 23 million loved-up people planning to splash out on their other half, 44 per cent of people aged 18 to 24 are expected to spend between £50 and £99, according to PayPal.
Single people will spend more than people in relationships, however, with singletons forking out an average of £72.60, compared with couples who are expected to spend £69.90.
Cristina Hoole, spokeswoman for PayPal, said: "It would seem that romance is far from dead as almost half of Brits will be splashing out a massive £1.6 billion on their loved ones this week."
Ms Hoole added that the average Briton will spend the equivalent of 15 per cent of their weekly wage. This may mean that people are willing to stretch the purse strings in order to find that special someone the perfect gift.
PayPal statistics show that eight in ten people received presents that they did not want at Christmas, meaning that the pressure may be on to make up for past mistakes this Valentine's Day.
