Engagement rings 'cost one month's salary'
Britain's men will spend between half a month and one month's salary on an engagement ring when proposing, according to the latest research from Halifax.
The survey found that 69 per cent of British men expect this to be the cost of the engagement ring they buy, while nine per cent believe it would be fine to go over the one-month salary barrier.
Once married, the spending continues with Halifax pointing to anniversaries that cost an average of £40 to £60, with one in five spending in excess of £100 on such occasions.
Adrian Bryant from Halifax Credit Cards suggested that the firm's research highlights that Britons are people who "have big hearts".
Just under a third (32 per cent) chose the traditional anniversary celebration of eating out, with 20 per cent of men opting to buy their loved one jewellery as an anniversary gift.
However, more than a quarter (27 per cent) of men also admitted to having forgotten an anniversary at some point.
Last week, Abbey revealed that 1.8 million Britons are planning to propose to their partners during 2008.
