People 'should switch suppliers to save money'

UK homeowners may be able to save money by switching gas and electricity providers despite the recent rise in energy prices, it has been claimed.

By switching suppliers, people may be able to benefit from the offers that companies provide for new customers, according to energywatch.

It may be beneficial to opt for a supplier that is not local to the town or city in which people live, as prices tend to be lower outside the area of the original home suppliers, Georgina Walsh, spokesperson for energywatch, stated.

"Whichever original company you're with, if you haven't switched, you will be paying more than somebody from outside that area.

"You can't afford to be passive now. Combined [household] bills for gas and electricity average more than £1,000 per year now."

People may also be able to save money by choosing an option whereby their gas and electricity are provided by the same company, Ms Walsh added.

Five out of the 'big six' energy providers have increased their prices by over ten per cent in recent months. E.ON was the latest company to announce price rises in response to increases in wholesale gas and electricity costs.

People in debt or struggling to keep up with bills may wish to take out a consolidation loan in order to condense their monthly outgoings.
