AA: Check insurance policy before driving abroad
People planning on taking their car abroad should ensure that they are properly insured, it has been advised.
Before taking a car to Europe, drivers should check their insurance policies to make sure that they will be covered outside the UK, according to the AA.
Some insurers do not automatically provide comprehensive cover for travel, so it is wise to tell the insurance company before the trip, Ian Crowder, public relations manager for the AA, commented.
"Just check your policy document and see if you're covered," Mr Crowder said.
"The policy document may say: 'Yes, you can go [out of] the UK but tell us before you go' [and] some say: 'Yes, you can go, but it will cost you something', so there is no hard and fast rule as far as insurance on the continent is concerned."
Getting the car moved and repaired may be very difficult without the appropriate insurance, he added.
An RAC study showed that UK motorists who travel to Spain or Portugal are three times more likely to be involved in an accident than when at home.
