Texting behind the wheel 'driving motorists to distraction'
Texting while driving is still one of the biggest causes of distractions behind the wheel, according to new research.
Nearly 90 per cent of people have gadgets in their cars, which may lead to road accidents, Gocompare.com has claimed.
Mobile phones, mp3 players and satnav devices are all causes for distraction for British motorists, the website's study has shown, with nearly one in five people admitting to checking their gadgets every 15 minutes, while five per cent claim to check them "all the time".
Almost half of the people surveyed carried mobiles in their cars, with some of them reading and answering text messages while driving.
Hayley Parsons, managing director of Gocompare.com, said: "Driving is a complex task and trying to do something else at the same time - whether it is using a mobile, changing a CD or lighting a cigarette - can be very distracting.
"And being distracted at the wheel is one of the biggest causes of road accidents."
People should switch to voicemail and store their phones away before driving or use a hands-free device, as well as setting up the choice of music beforehand, the website advises.
Gocompare.com recently issued flood warnings to motorists in lieu of poor UK weather conditions.
