Householders 'doing their bit for the environment'

UK homeowners are becoming more environmentally-friendly, it has been revealed.

Many people are already taking measures to do their bit for the environment, according to Legal & General, with over 70 per cent of Britons claiming to be switching off lights in unused rooms and not leaving the television on standby.

Some hope to go further than this by modifying their homes with things like solar panels. In fact, 59 per cent of people said they would consider buying a house that was adapted to use renewable energy this way, while 40 per cent said they would choose a carbon neutral home.

Ruth Wilkins, head of communications at Legal & General's insurance business, said: "Increasing awareness of the environmental impact that our lifestyles may have on our surroundings could potentially change the look of our homes in the future."

Ms Wilkins added that when considering renovating properties to make them greener, people should be sure to check their contents insurance to allow for all eventualities.

Green home improvements are set to cost UK homeowners £13 billion, according to the Co-operative Bank.
