UK drivers 'scared to break down'

Most UK drivers have admitted that they would be afraid if they broke down.

According to a survey conducted by Britannia Rescue, two-thirds of motorists would feel scared and vulnerable if they broke down, yet almost one-third of people make no preparations before they set out on a journey.

Over 90 per cent of women claimed that they would feel especially vulnerable if they broke down at night, double the proportion of men who would feel that way. Many women also felt that they would not accept help from a man if they were stuck.

Andrew Beard, spokesperson for Britannia Rescue, commented that it was a sad reflection of society that people felt this way, yet expressed surprise that people did not take more precautions.

"Our research suggests that many motorists don't take sensible personal safety precautions before setting off on their journey," he said.

"Making sure your mobile is charged and buying road rescue cover are simple means to alleviate the stress and expense of breaking down at the roadside."

Last month, people were more likely to break down on January 2nd following the Christmas period.
