One in four homes are uninsured

A quarter of the British public do not have home contents insurance, according to new figures.

Confused.com has highlighted the fact that some one in four homes go uninsured despite the fact that they house so many valuable possessions, from flat screen televisions to jewellery.

The price comparison service has advised people to shop around for the best deal, since insuring belongings worth £40,000 can cost as little as £43.98 for a family of four per year.

Debra Williams, managing director of Confused.com, emphasised the need for contents insurance since many people forget to take precautions against thieves, such as forgetting to lock their doors.

"Contents insurance is not a legal requirement, but should really be considered an absolute necessity," she said.

"Many people decide against contents cover without considering the potential pit-falls involved."

The severe weather recently experienced in the UK has also brought attention to the need for home insurance. Confused.com figures showed that one in three homes that may be vulnerable were not covered.
