Garden theft 'on the up'
Homeowners are becoming more vulnerable to garden theft, it has been claimed.
People in the UK are now spending some £4 billion collectively on plants pots and furniture for their gardens as a result of the growing popularity of the garden makeover, according to RIAS.
However, many Britons are failing to protect themselves against theft in the "rising tide of garden crime" of over one million such robberies per year, the company said.
Janet Connor, RIAS managing director, commented: "Sadly we are all now sitting targets for garden theft."
"Yet people are not taking anywhere near enough precautions. Most home insurance policy holders don't realise that the garden and its contents may not be routinely protected by their existing cover in the event of theft, loss or damage."
The organisation has advised people to take simple measures to help prevent such crime; for example, always lock away tools and equipment and enclose the garden area as much as possible.
Nationwide recently advised consumers to insure their garden's contents, which can value anything between £250 and £1,000 on average.
