Brits think 2% of income 'should go to charity'

Many UK consumers believe that people should donate at least two per cent of their income to charity, according to new research.

The Charities and Aid Foundation (Caf) has found that nearly one-third of Britons feel this way, with a further one in ten believing that five to ten per cent of annual incomes should be given to charity, statistics unearthed by a YouGov survey reveal.

However, some 42 per cent stated that less than two per cent should be donated, while seven per cent felt that nothing should be given - an attitude that may be a result of the ongoing economic downturn, Sheila Hooper, director of individual giving at Caf explained.

"As many are feeling the pinch at the moment with house prices falling and household bills rising it is really heartening to see so many people think we should be giving more money to charity," she said.

People struggling to keep on top of their finances may consider giving them a boost by taking out a loan.

Caf recently highlighted the fact that charities could lose some £90 million per year when income tax drops.
