Accidents in the kitchen caused by emulating TV chefs

People attempting to emulate their favourite TV chefs may find themselves in an accident if new statistics are to be believed.

Over one in ten people in the UK have had an accident while cooking or caused damage to their kitchen as a result of endeavouring to cook like chefs on shows such as Great British Menu, according to new research from esure.

Novices, amateurs and useless chefs are how some culinary beginners described themselves, despite the fact three quarters of them had attempted a complex cooking technique - something that could potentially cause damage to themselves or their home, esure warns.

Among the techniques that caused the most destruction include fast chopping, deep frying, steaming and tenderising.

"It's great to see that kitchens across the country are becoming hubs of creative cookery - fuelling a passion for food and the growth of the dinner party," said Tony Tobin, chef from BBC's Ready Steady Cook.

"However, all celebrity chefs have had years of training and people at home must remember this when attempting to recreate any dishes they see on TV," he said.

BBC Two's cookery show sees Ainsley Harriot present, along with other celebrity chefs who help contestants produce a meal against the clock.
