Uninsured drivers 'not being punished'
Uninsured drivers 'not being punished'
Many uninsured drivers are getting away with driving illegally, according to one expert.
Every year 350,000 people admit to driving without insurance, according to MoneyExpert.
The British Insurance Brokers' Association (BIBA) has said it believes that this could be due to a lack of government initiatives to stamp out uninsured driving; it compares this problem to others like drink driving and not wearing a seat belt, which have each received government publicity.
BIBA is the UK's leading representative of insurance brokers, intermediaries and customers, and is a partner to a number of the UK's largest insurance brokers.
Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive for the BIBA, said: "People think they can get away with it and they have been able to get away with it. We estimate that two million drivers have been able to get away with it up until now
But times are changing."
Research carried out by MoneyExpert found that only one per cent of all uninsured drivers could not afford the premiums and that drivers in the 18 to 24-year-old age group were the most likely to drive without insurance.
