Online shoppers 'should act as they would on the high street'
Shoppers are being urged to be more careful with their personal information when shopping online.
Helen Lord, fraud and regulatory compliance director at Experian, says that consumers should not allow suspicious individuals or organisations access to their sensitive information and to use their discretion about which sites to purchase from.
She advises consumers to keep their details in a safe place and to keep regular checks on credit reports in order to detect fraudulent activity early on.
Ms Lord added: "We'd advise customers to practice good habits like choosing not to store their details on a particular website and not using their credit card on a site that may not look reputable."
According to Apacs, the UK's payments association, as of March 2008 the UK's online fraud rate had increased by 25 per cent in the last year to £535.2 million.
