Energy efficiency 'attracts consumers'

Consumers are attracted to homes with good energy efficiency ratings, according to the Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (IPHE).

There are both financial and environmental gains to be had though improved energy efficiency and the IPHE claims that the current emphasis on saving energy could lead buyers to pick houses with better energy efficiency over those with less.

Danny Davis, senior technical engineer for the IPHE, believes that this increase in consumer awareness could be due to the publication of the government's new Home Improvement Packs (Hips).

Mr Davis said: "Energy conscious consumers would certainly be attracted to a house incorporating both energy and water conserving technologies over a similar house without such measures in place."

The IPHE is the professional body for the UK plumbing and heating industry.

According to government figures, one-third of homeowners in the UK plan to carry out some form of energy efficient improvement to their home in the next 12 months.
