DIY 'mistakes costing homeowners £1.5bn a year'
A recent report released by the home insurance company Zurich has found that UK households are having to spend an accumulated £1.5 billion a year to fix DIY accidents.
One in six DIY jobs had to be fixed according to the report, with the average spend being £280.
However, it did say that some cases were as expensive as £2,000.
It also found that ten per cent of people who made a DIY blunder waited over a year to call in a professional to fix the problem.
Steve Gilbert, technical underwriting manager for Zurich said: "Doing it yourself can be a great achievement but we would like to remind all DIY novices that they can often endanger themselves and their property, so if you are unsure, always call in a professional."
As the bank holiday weekend draws closer millions of Brits are expected to take the opportunity to make some home improvements.
The most common DIY job is painting - which accounts for 83 per cent of all DIY jobs, according to Halifax Home Insurance research - with many people expected to do some this weekend.
