14.6m 'expected to make bank holiday trips'

Over half the population of Britain is expected to make some form of journey this bank holiday weekend, according to research carried out by esure.

According to the study, 51 per cent of Britons plan to get away at the weekend and because of this there is sure to be congestion.

Esure advises that most people will experience some form of delay while travelling this weekend and should be adequately prepared.

On average, motorists will suffer delays of 45 minutes, train passengers will have delays of 51 minutes and those travelling by plane will suffer delays of one hour and 12 minutes.

Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting at esure, said: "Travel delays are expected over any bank holiday weekend but the worst place to be is stuck is in a traffic jam where there's no escape. Drivers should make sure that they, their vehicle and their passengers are prepared for the journey."

In other news, British Airways announced that the delays it suffered at the opening of Heathrow's Terminal 5 will not be repeated when the company continues to transfer flights to the terminal in June.
