Increase in petrol 'costs bank holiday travellers £110m'
Over the last four months diesel prices have risen 29 per cent and unleaded prices rose 17 per cent.
This bank holiday weekend, 18 million people are expected to make an average journey of 304 miles, according to the AA.
Statistics released by the organisation show that British travellers will pay an extra £110 million compared to their fuel costs on the bank holiday weekend last year.
There will be a 33 per cent increase in traffic on the roads on Friday and Monday with the worst affected areas expected to be the M25, the M6, the M5 and the M1.
Andy Taylor, AA Patrol of the Year 2008, said: "With most people travelling an average of 304 miles over the bank holiday weekend, make sure you prepare well before you leave.
"Remember to check your vehicle's coolant and oil levels, battery, tyre tread and pressures."
According to the Mirror, the most popular bank holiday destination in the UK will be Chester Zoo, closely followed by London Zoo and then the Natural History Museum.
