Mind calls for 'appropriate concern by lenders'

Following Mind Week in the UK last week, the organisation Mind has issued a call for lenders to treat consumers with appropriate care and concern for their mental health.

Research carried out by Mind states that up to two-thirds (66 per cent) of individuals in debt could be suffering from some form of mental illness.

It also said that individuals who are worrying about being in debt should contact the Money Advice Liaison Group about its mental health guidelines.

A spokesperson for Mind said: "We've been working with the Financial Services Authority to get a few things in place.

"We are calling on banks to keep to the Money Advice Liaison Group guidelines about how to treat people who have problem debt and are experiencing mental health problems."

Mind is the national association for mental health in the UK and campaigns on behalf of those with mental illness.
