Motorbikes 'better for the environment'
Motorbikes are a more environmentally-friendly mode of transport than cars, according to an industry commentator.
Ian Crowder, public relations manager at AA Insurance, said that motorbikes used less fuel and were therefore better for the environment.
He added: "You could get 70 or 80 miles per gallon out of a bike, if not more, compared to 30 or 40 out of a car."
This improved fuel consumption could be down to the decreased weight of the vehicle in comparison to a car.
However, statistics released by the Department for Transport showed that there were 16,360 motorcyclists injured on Britain's roads in 2006 and that individuals aged between 16 and 34 were the most likely to have an accident.
In 2007, there were approximately 1.22 million licensed motorbikes in the UK and every year approximately 80,000 more people take motorcycle tests with typically 60.5 per cent of those individuals achieving a passing grade.
