Third of UK drivers 'don't know the speed limit'
New research published by the price comparison company uswitch.com has found that one in three UK drivers were unsure on how fast they were legally allowed to travel.
The company tested 2,500 of Britain's motorists on their knowledge of road speed limits and found that 33 per cent did not know the national speed limit is 60mph.
Worringly, almost one in ten (eight per cent) of those asked got every question on the survey wrong.
Ashton Berkhauer, insurance expert at uswitch.com, said: "It's worrying that many of the accidents can be directly linked to gaps in driver knowledge. It seems that some motorists forget the rules of the road as quickly as they tear up their L-plates."
According to statistics compiled in the statistical bulletin Main Transport Statistics 2007, the total volume of traffic in the UK rose by three per cent in the year to 44 billion vehicle kilometres.
