Quarter of parents had children's toys stolen
Nearly a quarter (22 per cent) of UK parents have said that at some point their child's equipment or toys have been stolen from outside their homes.
Research carried out by the Halifax building society found that thieves are targeting children's belongings that have been left out in the garden, with many retailing for hundreds of pounds to replace.
The most popular item to steal was a child's bike, with almost one in five of all thefts (18 per cent) being this item.
David Rochester, head of underwriting at Halifax Home Insurance, said: "It is shocking that we live in a society where thieves are even prepared to steal from children.
Mr Rochester advised parents to get home insurance cover that protects them against thefts like these, at least financial, if not psycholgically.
The government's advisory website on how to reduce the likelihood of burglary states that individuals should always keep their gates and garden sheds locked, as well as purchasing strong pad locks that cannot be easily broken.
